Everyday panties can be clean and modern solid colors, sweet lace, or fun prints. Styles range from skimpy to full coverage.  Plus-size women are as diverse in their tastes in underwear as thinner counterparts.  The market has finally recognized this fact and extended size ranges in most panty styles.

Body smoothing control panties are increasingly popular with younger women, in addition to older.  Microfiber offers seamless panty looks that work well under body conscious clothing.  Meanwhile plain cotton underwear is still favored by many.

Panty Sizing

Sizing on plus-size panties can be confusing. Sometimes they are sized according to dress size, in which case you should choose the same size you wear in jeans.  Other times lingerie panty sizing is used.

The chart equivalents are approximate, although women's body shapes vary tremendously.  Those with a flat derriere and fuller waist, for example, may find they wear smaller panty sizes compared to their jean size, while those with full hips and smaller waists may find lower leg styles require a larger size to fit well, while high cut leg styles work according to the size chart below.  And like most women's clothing, sizing varies among brands, so use this as a general guide, only.  A good rule of thumb is that sexier panties and those with built in shaping tend to run smaller than basic cotton and microfiber undies, unless they are offered by a plus specialty retailer.:

  • Size 14/16 = panty size 8 = XL / 1X

  • Size 16/18 = panty size 9 = XXL / 1X

  • Size 18/20 = panty size 10 = XXXL / 2X

  • Size 20/22 = panty size 11 = 2X

  • Size 22/24 = panty size 12 = 3X

  • Size 24/26 = panty size 13 = 3X

Shopping Resources for Plus-Size Panties

For those looking for underwear basics in plain cotton or microfiber, often available in multi-packs, options are available from retailers such as Kohl's and Target.  The Hanes Just My Size line is another excellent resource, especially for underwear sizes larger than 9.

Plus specialty retailers offer underwear in a wide range of panty styles from basic cotton to sexier and lacier looks. Unlike the department stores and lingerie retailers, sizing for these usually correspond to dress and jeans sizing, making it much easier to locate the correct size.   Lane Bryant's in house Cacique brand is exceptionally popular offering the widest range of leg cuts, fabrics, colors, and patterns in size 14 to 28W.   For those who enjoy bra and panty sets they have a number of coordinating looks with full-figured bras sizes that fit B to DDD cups.  Torrid carries almost exclusively sexier panties for larger sizes up to 6X, while Avenue is good for both basic cotton and moderately sexy looks for size 14 to 32W.  It is also one of the most reliable sources for shapewear including tummy slimming panties.  Meanwhile, the Intimates department at Catherine's carries cotton and microfiber styles in a wide variety of colors and prints for panty size 9 to 15, catering to both plus and super size women.

High quality and luxury panties that cost $30 or more per pair are available in larger sizes up to 3X at the upscale department stores such as Nordstrom, in addition to lingerie specialty retailers such as Her Room.
